Solution To Printing Problem with HP LaserJet™ Models 1200, 4000, 4050, 5000, 8100 And Successors

Due to an undefined bug in the internal workings of certain HP LaserJet™ printer models (1200, 4000, 4050, 5000, 8000 and successors), the default print resolution must be set to 300 dpi. The 300 dpi resolution must be physically set at the printer itself using the printer's Print Quality menu or, if this menu doesn't exist or you wish to do it automatically, by downloading and executing one of the two small (35k) programs shown on the next two lines:

Click here to download lpt1-300.exe for printers connected to LPT1 or

Click here to download lpt2-300.exe for printers connected to LPT2

Once downloaded, simply ready the printer and execute the appropriate program (double click it). It will just blink and thats all there is to it. The 300dpi setting will remain unless someone changes it.

If this is not done the printer is unable to differentiate between some of our downloaded Helvetica fonts and the HP internal Helvetica fonts with the same name but different proportionality. The printers correctly select four out of our six fonts but incorrectly select two of their own, which results in the printing of some lines being offset. HP tells us to set the printer to 300 dpi default to correct the problem. No other programs are affected since all programs select the printer resolution at execution time. Again, note that this default must be set either physically at the printer itself or by using one of the two short programs described above, not from your Window's Printer Properties control screen.
